Practice 15: Death penalty outline

 

 I. Death Penalty should be completely abolished in our society owing to the fact that it doesn’t decrease crime rates, costs a lot of money and puts innocent lives at risk.

II. It does not reduce the crime rate although it should.

  A. Society would feel afraid.

    1. No evidence that using it causes fewer crimes.
    2. NC Coalition for one alternative.
  B. Lower murder rate exists in the states without the death penalty.

    1. The US had a 2012 murder rate of 4.8 victims per 100000.

III. It costs a lot of money.

  A. Extra measures add costs.

    1. Oregonian.
  B. Total prosecution and defense costs.

IV. It puts innocent lives at risk.

  A. Since the reinstatement in the US 138 innocent men have been released.

    1. Cases discovered by new scientific techniques and investigations.

    2. Missouri, Texas, and Virginia investigations.

  B. To execute an innocent person is morally reprehensible.

V. We have all the right reason to live. May it be a criminal, a priest or just an ordinary person? (…)
